If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Editorial team in the Communications Department at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). We're seeking a talented, highly motivated individual to join our team as a desktop publisher. As a member of the team, you will join a staff of dedicated publications professionals.

As a Desktop Publisher...

  • Format classified and unclassified technical reports, briefs, presentations, and other communications materials.
  • Input and format text, tables, and graphics.
  • Build and implement page layouts and templates.
  • Work with various document types, including electronic, scanned, Adobe PDF, and handwritten.
  • Support multiple reports and other tasks, at times simultaneously.
  • Use advanced functions in Adobe PDF (e.g., creating links, combining multiple files, cropping, sizing, editing, editing Bookmarks in the navigation pane).
  • Work with technical editors to support reviews, prepare review copies and merge reviewers' comments; prepare documents for final management review; coordinate final document production including formatting, preparing binders and tabs, coordinating printing and preparing electronic copies.
  • Create and update automated fields such as the table of contents and lists of acronyms and figures.
  • Interact with teammates, artists, project managers, authors, and other partners to understand project requirements for content, production, and scheduling.
  • Follow internal and program-specific style guides while formatting.
  • Follow security classification guidelines, as directed by program requirements.
  • Perform compliance checks while compiling documents or volumes to confirm that final files/printed documents meet contract and program requirements for format and content.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • A bachelor's degree in English, language arts or other related technical subject area.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated ability formatting publications and technical documents.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, including implementing document templates.
  • Experience following templates and style guides.
  • Experience formatting documents using paragraph and character styles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A willingness to learn tools, subject matter or applications with which you may not already be familiar.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously with an eye for prioritization.
  • Experience independently researching issues and troubleshooting problems encountered with desktop publishing software.
  • Are able to obtain Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Proficiency with Adobe FrameMaker.
  • Proficiency building and maintaining document templates in Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency with formatting PowerPoint files.
  • Experience in a publishing environment using software other than Word.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat.
  • Experience with advanced features in Word, including using fields, macros, cross-referencing, and outline numbering for sophisticated, multi-file documents.
  • Knowledge of or experience with HTML, XML, LaTeX, or other markup languages.
  • Experience with document accessibility, such as 508 compliance.
  • Experience in classified document marking and handling.
  • An active Secret or higher level security clearance.
