The Opportunity

We are seeking an Attorney Development Supervisor to join our Firm. This position will be based in our Washington D.C. office (hybrid). The Attorney Development Supervisor supervises all aspects of attorney new hire arrival and orientation, new associate mentor program, internal and external training and development initiatives, and performance evaluations. This position also monitors bar admissions and CLE compliance to ensure requirements are met, and provides guidance to department Assistants and Senior Assistant to ensure that operating needs are met.

  • Supervises all aspects of attorney new hire arrival, orientation, and new associate mentor program.
  • Collaborates with Senior Assistant and Assistant regarding the communication for arrival and orientation of new hire attorneys (e.g., letters, forms, clerkship and associate bonuses, moving expenses).
  • Manages attorney departure procedures and ensures appropriate actions are handled.
  • Coordinates internal and external training and development initiatives including all CLE programs, DC office specific training, and firm-wide junior, mid-level, senior, and counsel training.
  • Oversees coordination and timely completion of the semi-annual and annual evaluation processes.
  • Maintains the Washington, DC office attorney manual and proposes revisions and additions as necessary.
  • Maintains current and departed attorney and client specialist personnel files consistent with applicable laws and firm policies.
  • Assists department with special projects including new associate training, Attorney Outing, partner meetings, and Washington, DC office events.
  • Supervises the department professional staff including conducting employment searches, onboarding, training, overseeing work performance, writing/delivering performance reviews, approving timecard entries, approving time off requests, etc.
  • Coordinates and oversees department projects, day-to-day operations and long-range plans.
  • Serves as a resource to attorneys in the office.
  • Supervises attorney engagement efforts.
  • Ensures current knowledge of firm policies and practices for professional staff, current knowledge of industry trends and continued professional development for professional staff.
  • Recommends and implements changes and improvements in methods and procedures to higher level management.
  • Participates in the interviewing, selection and training process.
  • Monitors time, attendance, overtime, and expense reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with firm policies.
  • Assists Senior Manager in effectively utilizing the firm's performance management process to communicate performance expectations, monitor performance, coach employees and manage unsatisfactory performance.
  • Recommends guidelines and practices to promote efficiency, effectiveness, excellent customer service, and improved employee relations, in alignment with the firm's Core Values.
  • Develops and communicates departmental guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensures accurate and timely responses to requests for departmental services.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to facilitate effective work relationships with others.
  • Manages Firm resources responsibly.
  • Complies with and understands Firm operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborates with Attorney Recruitment team on overlapping projects and priorities, and as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current knowledge of industry best practices, trends, and techniques
  • Knowledge of relevant firm computer software programs (e.g., Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) with the ability to learn new software and operating systems (e.g., Lawson, Lawcruit, and internet and intranet applications including Skadline)
  • Knowledge and implementation of the annual budget process
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrates close attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to effectively supervise others and employ coaching and problem-solving techniques
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and shifting priorities
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and delegate effectively
  • Ability to use discretion and exercise independent and sound judgment
  • Flexibility to adjust hours and work the hours necessary to meet operating and business needs


Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of four years of progressively responsible related experience with a minimum of one year in a law firm or professional services environment and two years of supervisory or leadership experience.
