State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Materials Technology (OMT) is recruiting for an ARAN Crew Chief (Transportation Engineer Technician V). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications* listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work: The primary priority function of this position is to operate the Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), a highly technical, multifunctional, automatic pavement analyzer. This position provides the technical and administrative support needed to meet the assignments of the ARAN automated data collection system for the SHA Pavement Testing Team. Information and services provided by this equipment are utilized by pavement management to provide reports to the Office of the Administrator, Chief Engineer, Planning and Preliminary Engineering, Maintenance, and the district offices. The ARAN consists of multiple sensing systems which are each controlled by a computer in a LAN (local area network), which also includes a central processor that integrates the data and creates the output. This position requires the knowledge and ability to cross function with other crews of the Field Explorations Division, Pavement Testing Team when needed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

EXPERIENCE: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS: Four (4) years of the required experience must include data collection, field testing, coring testing methods, and/or testing systems.

This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability). No substitutions are allowed for a selective qualification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of state highway network.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Computer skills to manage field data and familiarity with excel.
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information System (GIS) and database analysis.
  • Experience reading and interpreting highway maps.
NOTES:

1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.
Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

  • Ability to travel overnight and/or extended work hours to oversee and/or manage resources or projects.
  • Ability to work in other geographic areas within the state for extended time.
