The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies is looking for an Animal Caretaker Non-containment to support our government customer at Ft. Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide animal care at animal biosafety levels (ABSL) - 2 and receive animals.
  • Provide animal care and husbandry to the animals during experimental and non-experimental periods. This includes providing environmental enrichment in accordance with the applicable SOPs and EEP to all animals; monitoring animals twice daily.
  • Responsible for the receipt, examination, verification, and housing of all incoming animals.
  • House animals in appropriate size and types of cages to meet protocol and regulation requirements. Ensure adequate provision of feed and water for all animals under the Contractor's care. Replace bedding, change cages, and maintain the animal areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Apply a high level of skill, observation and knowledge of a wide variety of animal species and recognize minute yet significant changes.
  • Transfer animals from cages to items or holding equipment for the purpose of transport or temporary containment.
  • Clean and decontaminate areas.
  • Competently restrain species with which they are working; they shall be available for capturing in-cage, re-capturing, handling and restraint of all animals as needed.
  • Exercise considerable skill in tending animals, pre- and post-operatively.
  • Receive and visually inspect each shipment of feed and bedding.
  • Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms under investigation, utilization of rack and cage washers, and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect co-workers.
  • Utilize biological and/or industrial safety procedures.
  • Monitor certification/maintenance dates on medical equipment.
  • Provide training to personnel.
  • Assist with Cagewash. This includes, but is not limited to, changing of bedding, washing and sanitizing cages; and autoclaving equipment, feed, bedding, water, and other materials and supplies.
  • Maintain a same-day cage washing service.
  • Maintain records of the temperatures for each assigned autoclave load.
  • Sanitize the automatic watering lines after rack washing.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • High School Diploma
  • ALAT certification is require within six (6) months of hire

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Animal husbandry experience in a laboratory environment
  • Experience with at least three (3) of the following species: nonhuman primates, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, ferrets, and/or hamsters
  • MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience with cage or rack style washers
  • Ability to integrate in a teamwork atmosphere

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Forklift certification
  • Prior experience working with nonhuman primates (NHPs)
  • Autoclave experience
  • Working knowledge of GLP practices and documentation

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
